課程概述

This is a targeted language enhancement course designed specifically for students who have enrolled or plan to enroll in the interpretation track of the Chinese/English Translation and Interpretation Program. The aim of the course is to prepare you for the linguistic demands faced by interpreters. The materials and tasks used in class are chosen with the competencies important to interpreters in mind, including active listening, memory, oral expression skills, etc. You will become familiar with tools for discourse analysis and be able to recognize how English speakers construct meaning through discourse. A wide range of authentic listening materials and speaking tasks will be used to improve your listening and speaking strategies and skills. You will need to work both independently and collaboratively with your classmates. You will also be expected to keep a language learning journal (to record and reflect on your learning in and out of class), attend English lectures/conferences, and complete a personal learning portfolio. 

課程目標
1. Students will become familiar with tools for discourse analysis and be able to recognize how English speakers construct meaning through discourse, including the different discourse features of spoken texts produced by native and non-native speakers of English and different generic stages of different spoken texts.
2. Students will demonstrate good public speaking skills.
3. Students will be able to use different communicative strategies to express meanings effectively.
4. Students will understand the specific linguistic demands faced by interpreters and be able to identify their linguistic weaknesses accordingly and to develop and implement plan to address these problems effectively.
